Roses are even rosier now for Blackpink’s Rosé, who dropped her first solo album on 12 March. Once considered one of the most underrated members of Blackpink, Rosé’s profile has skyrocketed over the past year or so. She is the second Blackpink member, after Jennie, to have a solo debut. Still, there were doubts whether her album, consisting of two songs fully in English, would be well-received by Blinks and K-pop fans.
Well, the numbers speak for themselves. Even ahead of its official release date, R became the first album from a female soloist to surpass 200,000 preorders over at K-pop retail site Ktown4u. The record was previously held by IU, who recorded 118,000 preorders.
On YouTube, ‘On The Ground’ clocked up 39,062,601 views in 24 hours. Once YouTube confirms the figure, Rosé will have broken the previous record of 36 million set by Psy in 2013 with ‘Gentleman’, which has remained unbeaten for eight years. Looks like Blackpink will soon have to change their “in your area” tagline to “in all areas“.
Over at Spotify, On The Ground debuted at No. 8 on the daily Global Top 50 chart for 12 March with 3,262,615 streams in the first 24 hours. It now has the most streams achieved in 24 hours for a song officially released by a Korean solo artist on Spotify.
Rosé, who was born in New Zealand and raised in Australia, says the song is about soul-searching and staying grounded: “Sometimes, when you’re always on the roll, you forget to take care of what matters to you most and it’s just a song to remind us that everything we need is already within us.”
