Everything you want to know about the new Dyson Airwrap styler

When Dyson released the Supersonic hairdryer back in 2016, it took the beauty world by storm. Besides looking super sleek and futuristic, it halves the time usually taken to dry your hair and enhances its natural shine while preventing heat damage — in other words, it is game-changing.

Naturally, anticipation ran high when Dyson prepared to unveil its second beauty technology creation earlier this month. Although the launch took place halfway across the world in New York, it didn’t take long before beauty buffs here caught whiff of it as the internet was set abuzz with the tech company’s latest invention: the Dyson Airwrap styler.

What is the hype all about?

Dyson has done it again, introducing us to yet another cutting-edge innovation. After six years in the making, the Dyson Airwrap styler emerges on the scene as a revolutionary styling tool that is able to blow dry, curl and straighten hair by harnessing the power of aerodynamics instead of heat, avoiding hair damage.

It comes with different attachments that were designed with varying hair types and desired looks in mind: 30mm and 40mm Airwrap barrels to create curls and waves of different shapes and volume; a firm smoothing brush to tame and smooth unruly hair; a round volumizing brush to give finer, straighter hair more volume; a soft smoothing brush to add body to limp, flat hair; and a pre-styling dryer that takes hair from wet to damp, all ready for styling.

If its multi-functional ability isn’t enough to convince you, maybe the way it works will.

So, how does it work?

Perhaps the most compelling draw of the Airwrap is how easy it is to use. To curl, simply hold out a small section of your hair, then move the styler towards it and watch as the hair magically wraps around the barrel — except it’s not magic; rather, you’re looking at aerodynamics technology at play here.

At the heart of the Airwrap is the digital motor V9 — the same motor that powers the Supersonic — which spins to form an area of high pressure at the top of the styler, and subsequently a high velocity jet of air that wraps around the barrel to create a physical phenomenon known as the Coanda effect. This allows the Airwrap to curl hair without the use of extreme heat, forgoing the risk of heat damage that comes with some of the other hair styling tools in the market. The result? Softer, healthier and bouncier curls.

The styling brushes use the same effect to straighten and smooth your tresses. Coupled with an airflow direction valve, the air flows in the direction of your hair no matter which way you brush through them, giving you a smooth and shiny blow-dry finish.

Another feature of the Airwrap that is out to care for your hair is intelligent heat control. A glass bead thermistor in the styler measures the temperature up to 40 times a second, regulating its temperature to ensure that your hair will not be exposed to damaging heat at any time.

Do I have to blow dry my hair before using it?

Since the Dyson Airwrap practically dries and styles at the same time, it works best on damp hair — think about 80 per cent dry. You can use it on dry hair, it just won’t last as long. On the other hand, using it on strands that are too wet will make it harder for the barrels to pick up the ends of the hair, and it’ll also take longer for curls to set. This is where the pre-styling dryer comes in really useful.

Pro tips to using the Dyson Airwrap styler?

The styling brushes are quite straightforward to use. While the curling barrels might take some time getting used to, it won’t be long before you’re styling your own hair like a pro. Dyson provides both clockwise and anti-clockwise barrels, making it easy to achieve symmetrical curls. To create your desired curls, simply follow these easy steps:

1) Turn on styler, let your hair wrap around the barrel and hold it there for 10 to 15 seconds.

2) Turn on the cool shot setting for 5 seconds to set curls.

3) Turn styler off and release.

Comb through the curls for more natural looking waves. Easy breezy.

Do all the different attachments come with it in a set?

It depends. The Dyson Airwrap styler is available in three different variants. The Complete set (RM2,199) comes with all the attachments; the Volume + Shape set (RM1,999) comes with the 30mm barrels, soft smoothing brush and round volumizing brush; and the Smooth + Control set (RM1,999) comes with both 30mm and 40mm barrels and the firm smoothing brush. All three sets include the handy pre-styling dryer.

Is the Dyson Airwrap styler worth it?

Like the Supersonic, the Dyson Airwrap styler is an investment purchase — you can live without it, but getting ready will be so much easier with it. From voluminous curls and natural waves to smooth, straight hair, DIY blowouts have never looked better.

The Dyson Airwrap styler is now available at Dyson Demo stores in Gardens Mall and Gurney Plaza, Robinsons KL at Four Seasons Place, and Dyson online
