Why micellar water deserves a spot on your beauty shelf

Micellar water is the stuff that legends are made of. It’s neither a face wash nor a toner, yet it works as powerful as the two products combined to clean makeup and dirt off your face.

This cleansing water has long been touted for its skin-saving properties, thanks to the microscopic oil molecules called micelles. When apply onto the skin, the tiny balls of cleansing agents work by attaching itself to the oil and dirt on your face, so all these impurities can be wiped away quickly and efficiently with a cotton pad.

The rinse-free formulation is gentler than soap and cleansers as the micelles dissolve the bad stuff without stripping your skin of the good stuff. Hence, micellar water is suitable to be used on all skin types. The only thing to look out for is the varieties or formulations; i.e. for dry, oily or sensitive skin types.

But can micellar water actually be used singularly as a cleanser? The industry is divided. While it is great as a quick cleanse or for when travelling, it will take a bit more effort to completely clear off stubborn eye makeup. We like to use this at the end of the day to clean the skin of impurities and makeup before proceeding with a cleansing milk or gel to purify the skin.

Micellar water is easy to use and gentle enough without irritating the skin, hence it has earned top spot on our beauty shelf. What about you? If you’re game, here are some of our favourite micellar water to try:
