Chanel reinterprets the iconic colours of the house for Spring 2017

It’s impossible to mention of the history of Chanel without talking about five iconic colour codes of the house: red, black, gold, white and beige. Founder Gabrielle Chanel was fond of colours that toe the line between defiant and unexpected, and now these classic shades are a signature of the brand, apparent from its classic tweed suits and lipstick lines. For the brand’s Spring 2017 makeup collection, Lucia Pica, Chanel’s Global Creative Makeup and Colour Designer has reinvented these five shades to challenge the conventional notions of beauty.

“I want to reverse beauty expectations and have women challenge themselves,” says Lucia Pica. “There is a sense of autobiography in what Gabrielle Chanel did. She could not help using these colours, these ‘codes’. This was who she was, it was her life.

From rouge noir for the lips during springtime (for the rebel in us all) to white and beige for the nails, Chanel Coco Codes is all about celebrating these hues and making it your own to create a radical statement.

For the face, Chanel brings new meaning to elegance with the Coco Code Exclusive Creation—two matte and two satin blush shades that blend harmoniously together for a radiant, highlighted complexion. The matte hues come in handy for contouring and a delicately flushed colour to the cheekbones. But if you prefer a subtle outdoor glow, the Joues Contraste Elégance‘s rosy beige colour is speckled with gold for that sublime effect.

No makeup range from Chanel is replete without a vivid red lipstick to channel your power woman—take on the Rouge Allure Ardente for a poppy-red coral, and Indépendante for a classy, fire-orange red. If you love a matte finish, Rouge Allure Velvet explores pink-tinged beige colours with two new additions this season. Add on a slick of gloss from Rouge Coco Shine, with either the glimmering gold Beige Doré for the daytime or Noir Moderne, a mysterious, transparent noir.

For a wash of gold over the eyes to complement your cheeks, explore two new Les 4 Ombres eyeshadow quads that are inspired by both opulence and simplicity. Codes Elégants offers a warm gold, intense brown and antiqued gold for a bold statement, while Codes Subtils is ideal for a day-to-night makeup look, featuring a shimmery rosy peach, platinum-bronze taupe, warm pewter, and bronze mid-brown.
