Here’s Korean star Song Hye Kyo’s take on ageing beautifully

If you’ve seen Korean actress Song Hye Kyo in close-up, you’d understand why she’d make the perfect brand ambassador for K-beauty brand Sulwhasoo. For starters, her flawless skin will pique your curiosity to glean every single beauty secret in her arsenal (let’s be real, drinking lots of water isn’t going to cut it)—it’s almost difficult to believe that she isn’t a year past 30 (she’s 37, by the way). But just recently, we discovered the latest addition to her skincare routine, and get this: it’s now available in stores for those who are very interested in getting poreless, almost-ageless skin like Song Hye Kyo’s.

Last week, we had the privilege of scoring a first look at Sulwhasoo’s new Bloomstay Vitalizing line, a complete skincare range made to combat skin exhaustion and signs of ageing. The potent active ingredient of this line is plum blossom extract, known for its antioxidant properties and resilience—it is notable for blooming even in the harshest of winters. Three products make this lineup, mainly the Bloomstay Vitalizing WaterBloomstay Vitalizing Serum, and Bloomstay Vitalizing Cream.

Upon first impression, the Bloomstay Vitalizing collection packs a punch—whether the subtle, plum blossom scent that rejuvenates as you apply the products onto your face, or the way the silky formula absorbs smoothly into the skin without leaving a sticky/greasy residue. Therein lies Song’s secret to keeping signs of ageing at bay.

“Since I’ve been on a very busy schedule lately, and because I’m not exactly young anymore, I’m trying to take better care of my skin on a daily basis. I use a mask daily, exercise regularly, and I do get care from aesthetic clinics as well. Because skin exhaustion always ends in ageing skin, I try to fight this with products from Sulwhasoo,” says Song. “These days, when I’m under the spotlight and busy filming, my skin tends to get a little dry so I’ve been using the new Bloomstay Vitalizing line, which goes on my skin like honey but absorbs very quickly. I put a large amount of it on my skin at night before I go to bed, and when I wake up my skin’s much better.”

For the best results, we find that it’s imperative to use the Bloomstay Vitalizing line in this order after your cleansing routine:

  1. Use your palms to tap the Bloomstay Vitalizing Water onto your skin—the moisturising formula of Yuzu and plum blossom extracts helps to lock in moisture and hydrate tight skin.
  2. Pour a moderate amount of the Bloomstay Vitalizing Serum onto your palm and apply in on your face. Use three fingers to gently tap the product into skin. Its complex of plum, red bean, quince, Korean pine seed and black sesame helps to reboot skin’s vitality and resilience.
  3. Complete your regiment with the Bloomstay Vitalizing Cream to take care of visible signs of ageing while keeping skin hydrated.

Lest you need an extra kicker to get your skin back in shape, here’s another beauty tip by Song Hye Kyo herself: “I’ve been told that when you take care of your skin in your 20s, it shows in your 30s. When you take care of your skin in your 30s, it shows in your 40s. I heard this in my early 30s and really tried to take care of my skin and go through proper daily skincare regimes, including putting on the right products that suit my skin. I believe that letting your skin rest adequately is important as well.”
