14 & 15 June, Once Upon A Time Malaysia @ RAW Art Space

A mixed media and digital art exhibition by KL-based Shirin Rouzegari, Once Upon A Time Malaysia is the artist’s attempt of evoking the unique sense of Malaysian nostalgia with images and motifs that are distinctively local.

14 – 23 June, membawang @ Zhan, Jaya One

A photography project by Gentle Rice, the series of images presented in membawang (including the article cover above) is photographer John K.’s homage to camaraderie and kinship, featuring the names and faces in his life that have imparted a lingering impression on both his work and creative process.

15 June, Copperplate calligraphy workshop @ Craft at No. 7

It’s never too late to pick up calligraphy. Learn the basics of letterforms and strokes in creating consistent and elegant script in this beginner-friendly copperplate calligraphy class. You’ll get to bring back a basic calligraphy kit that includes an oblique holder, G-nib, calligraphy ink and a worksheet.

19 June – 18 August 2019, The Buddhist Bug: A Creation Mythology @ Wei-Ling Contemporary

An ongoing interdisciplinary series that combines live performance, installation, photography, and video art by Cambodian-born, US-based Muslim Khmer artist Anida Yoeu Ali, it serves as a continuous exploration of her diasporic identities. Through the series, Ali performs as the Bug—”an assertion of paradoxes” and a creature that longs for stillness while on a constant journey in search for home.

22 June, Makers Unravel: Chang Yoong Chia and the Art of Materiality @ Malaysia Design Archive, The Zhongshan Building

In this edition of Makers Unravel, artist Chang Yoong Chia will share his philosophy and approach to his work, which ranges from paintings on canvases to stamp collages and embroidery, exploring a wide spectrum of topics such as politics, religion and nature. Chang has had his body of work exhibited at notable international platforms, including the 3rd Fukuoka Asian Art Triennale, Open Sea in Musee d’Art Contemporain du Lyon, France, Journey in Israel Museum, Welcome to the Jungle in Yokohama Museum of Art & Contemporary Art Museum Kumamoto, Japan.

Now on till 23 June 2019, Chia Yu Chian: Private Lives @ Ilham Gallery

Curated by Ilham Gallery director Rahel Joseph and Univesity of Malaya art historian Simon Soon, this exhibition focusses on the last decades of the late artist Chia Yu Chian’s practice by showcasing his paintings from the late 1960s until his passing in 1990. In 1963, Chia packed his belongings and moved to Kuala Lumpur, the capital city of this then-new country. In the years that followed, the city and its people became the main subjects of his painterly oeuvre.

Now on until 21 July 2019, KL Urbanism @ Creative Space (MaTiC)

In this photography exhibition by Azul Adnan, individuals going about their everyday business in KL are captured in evocative black and white images. The urban landscape of pathways, stations or parks in the city are punctuated by solitary faceless figures, creating visions of shapes, light and shadows sparring with concepts of ‘significance’, ‘purpose’ and ‘sense of being’.

Now on till 25 August 2019, Rediscovering Forgotten Thai Masters of Photography @ Ilham Gallery

Over 200 photographs taken in Thailand from the 1950s to 1970s by seven photographers—Buddhadasa Bhiku, Liang Ewe, S.H. Lim, Saengjun Limlohakul, Pornsak Sakdaenprai, ‘Rong Wong-Savun and M.L. Toy Xoomsai—were assembled and remastered for this exhibition, exploring photographic traditions at the onset of Modern Thailand, and suggesting views such as celebrity and cosmopolitan life alongside inland societies and the periods antecedent to Thailand’s tourism in the 60s.
