5 (more) live music venues in KL to check out

Bobo KL | 65-1, Jalan Bangkung, Taman Bandaraya, 59100 Kuala Lumpur

The words “Life is better upstairs” adorn the top of a doorway on Jalan Bangkung. One will soon find that is very much true, because take the stairs up to the second floor and you’ll find a cosy cocktail bar and music venue, where local jazz great David Gomes is the resident pianist and singer. Sean Ghazi is the artistic director here, so expect a stellar lineup of (quality) easy-listening music.

RAW Art Space | No.8, 4th Floor, Jalan Panggung, 50150 Kuala Lumpur

Essentially an indie art space and experimental music venue, there is always something exciting happening at RAW Art Space every week—and they are not your usual music performances either. Take the monthly series Soun(d)ance for example, which combines improvisational and instantaneous context musicians from diverse backgrounds and dancers for an eclectic performance.

Fono @ The Zhongshan Building | 80, Jalan Rotan, Kampung Attap, 50460 Kuala Lumpur

If you haven’t heard, fono is the place to be to escape from the overplayed hits that dominate airwaves. Founded by Rudolf La Faber and Uzair Sawal, the guys behind DJ collective Public School, the space acts as a listening room, rare music library, bar and collaborative space for live music. Expect anything from Asian garage and funk to dreamy noise pop.

Waikiki Bar | Lorong Sultan, Seksyen 52, 46200 Petaling Jaya, Selangor

Waikiki is so old school it doesn’t even have its own social media pages. This place might be far from the most glamorous joint in town, but it sure is laidback and reliable for some really good live music—especially during the Sunday night jam sessions, where the best and sometimes underrated local musicians come together and jam it out.

Alexis Bistro (Ampang) | Lot 10, Great Eastern Mall, Jalan Ampang, Desa Pahlawan, 50450 Kuala Lumpur

An oldie but a goodie, this Alexis branch in Ampang has been playing host to both local and international music acts since 2003. The live stage is up and running every Friday and Saturday night, and the repertoire usually doesn’t run far from good ol’ jazz or acoustic pop—comfort picks for a feel-good weekend.
