Interview: Kwon Eunbi on Switching Things Up For ‘Hello Stranger’

For four years, Kwon Eunbi was known as the charismatic leader of the girl group IZ*ONE. However, when they ultimately disbanded in 2021, the singer had to start her K-pop idol dream again—but this time, as a solo artist without her 11 members by her side.

Fortunately, it didn’t take long for Eunbi to come into her own. Since embarking on her solo career in 2021, the singer has captivated listeners with her melodic vocals, sleek choreography, and ever-evolving artistry.

With her catchy blend of dance pop and disco elements, Eunbi quickly established herself as one of K-pop’s most captivating solo artists with singles such as ‘Underwater’, ‘Glitch’, and ‘Sabotage’.

Now, Eunbi has returned with her latest single, ‘Hello Stranger’, a sensual mix of Afro-pop and tropical house that departs from her usual bouncy tracks.

Ahead, we speak to the powerhouse performer on how ‘Hello Stranger’ marks a new musical era and what sets her apart in the industry.

How is ‘Hello Stranger’ different compared to your previous releases?

The song tells the story of leading a mysterious stranger into my world, which gives it a more enchanting and captivating atmosphere compared to my previous releases. While ‘Glitch’ and ‘Underwater’ focused on introspective themes, ‘Hello Stranger’ feels more like an invitation—welcoming someone into my inner world.

What are you most excited to show your fans with this new song?

At times, I appear strong, and at other times, I waver—’Hello Stranger’ captures that honest side of me. On the surface, the song presents a captivating and alluring image, but underneath, it carries emotions of loneliness and courage.

How did you prepare for this particular comeback? Did you have to do anything differently?

‘Hello Stranger’ is a song where emotional nuance is especially important, so I focused a lot on the details during the recording process and went through several retakes to get it just right. Visually as well, I wanted to try something bold, so I even cut my hair into a short style to match the strong concept.

You’re channelling a dark feminine energy for this comeback. Is this a concept that comes more naturally to you compared to your lighter songs?

Lately, I feel like I’m getting to understand myself more deeply. This concept, in particular, felt surprisingly natural to me—as if it reflects a more honest, authentic side of who I am inside.

What are some things you always prioritise when preparing for your return to music?

I’m always thinking about how to convey the message—not just through the music, but also through performance and styling. It’s something I constantly reflect on to make sure everything aligns and tells a cohesive story.

There are so many talented female solo artists in K-pop, such as yourself. What do you think are your charms as Kwon Eunbi the artist that make you unique?

I want to present each moment like a scene from a short film, gradually building emotions with every frame. I believe the emotions that emerge through that process are what make up my unique strength as an artist.

As an artist, do you feel pressure to create another viral moment such as your ‘Glitch’ dance challenge and break more ground with your music?

It’s something I always carry a sense of pressure about, but I think that pressure is what pushes me to reflect more deeply and keep growing.

What kind of music do you want to create? Is there a sound that you’re slowly forming, or are you still experimenting and exploring?

I’m still in the process of exploring and discovering myself. Going forward, I hope to keep experimenting and searching, so that I can create music where my own colour naturally shines through.
