Grammys 2017: Highlights and winners

Adele was hands down the biggest winner of the night, scoring five out of her five nominations, including the Song of the Year award for ‘Hello’ and Album of the Year, where she went up against Beyoncé’s Lemonade. In a scene reminiscent of Mean Girls, the soulful singer broke her Grammy for Album of the Year in half to share it with Queen Bey. “I can’t possibly accept this award. The Lemonade album was just so monumental, Beyoncé. It was so monumental and well thought-out and beautiful and soul-bearing… we appreciate that. All of us artists here adore you. You are our light,” said Adele during her acceptance speech.

Earlier in the evening, Adele stopped the show – literally – during her performance. In a tribute to George Michael, she halted mid-song (“I’m sorry, I can’t mess this up for him”, swore, and restarted her rendition of ‘Fastlove, pt. 1’. The performance was stunning and emotional, a truly beautiful tribute to the late icon.

Beyoncé, who took home awards for Best Urban Contemporary Album and Best Music Video, proved that not even pregnancy is going to stop her from slaying the stage. After an introduction by her own mother, Tina Knowles, she appeared as a crowned fertility goddess in a glittering gold ensemble, and delivered an empowering performance celebrating motherhood.

Another tribute of the night saw Bruno Mars channeling Prince as he honoured the late icon in an electrifying (as always) performance. Donning a purple sequinned blazer, he took the stage with Morris Day and The Time for the last number in the tribute, ‘Let’s Go Crazy’, and got the crowd up and grooving with him.

It was also a big night for Chance the Rapper, as he picked up the Best New Artist and Best Rap Album Awards. “I claim this victory in the name of the lord. I thank God for my mother and my father who have supported me since I was young… and for all of Chicago,” said Chance while accepting his first award of the night.
