Royal baby: The name that has got everyone talking

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were beaming with pride as they presented their newborn son Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor to the world. “It’s magic, it’s pretty amazing. I have the two best guys in the world so I’m really happy,” gushed Meghan Markle.

Following the announcement of the arrival of the royal baby, the world was dying to get a glimpse of him. But the people were left more intrigued by the name choice. It is not traditionally royal. Pundits were betting on the likes of Alexander, Arthur, James, Philip and Spencer as the regal options.

What’s in a name?

Archie is German in origin and it is originally a shortened form of Archibald but now more popularly used as a name on its own. It was the 18th most popular names for boys in England and Wales in 2017.

Archie means ‘genuine’, ‘bold’ and ‘brave’, while Harrison means ‘son of Harry’ – a likely tribute to the duke himself. “He has the sweetest temperament, he’s really calm,” said Meghan as the couple speak at St George’s Hall at Windsor Castle during the presentation. “I don’t know who he gets that from,” laughed Prince Harry.

As the couple celebrates the arrival of Master Archie – as how he would now be known, the Internet is breaking out with some funny reactions. Here are our favourites so far:
