These jewels will make you dream of a holiday in the sun

On Swarovski creative director, Nathalie Colin’s moodboard for the brand’s Spring/Summer ’19 are images that immediately evoke wanderlust—the undulating sand dunes of the Saharan desert, zellige tiles that are ubiquitous in Morocco, colourful sorbets and cocktails evoking a neverending European summer’s night, and stark white walls juxtaposed against the shimmering blues of the ocean, seen at any given Greek island. It’s against this glorious moodboard that Colin has designed the SS19 collection, aptly called ‘Sunshine’.

“Sunshine induces happiness,” says Colin. “I love the way it transforms crystal as well as our mood. This collection is about escape, joy and looking at life in a positive way. We get so caught up in our lives sometimes—this collection is an invitation to disconnect from the urban craze and reconnect with life and sunshine-filled moments inspired by the Mediterranean.”

Having just met Nathalie when she was in Kuala Lumpur for Swarovski’s Brilliance For All annual gala event this past July, I know she loves a statement cocktail ring, and for Swarovski SS19, I found myself drawn to one in pink, red and orange hues, complete with cherries, an ice cream that’s starting to melt over the cone, an orange martini and a juicy slice of watermelon—a classic embodiment of a summer holiday, one that’s not that dissimilar to components from a recent trip I took to Santorini. The Greek isle also made it to Colin’s moodboard, and alongside elegant shoulder duster drop earrings in a gradient of blues, were cute underwater motifs including a crab pin, starfish and lobster earrings, and a seahorse pendant.

Another favourite were a pair of gold heart-shaped earrings with an evil eye set within a sunburst motif, studded with contrasting crystals in orange and blue. The warm, largely gold-tone jewels were inspired by sun-drenched Morocco with its golden brown sand dunes, and the idea of having a personal lucky charm to wear with you on the daily for a dose of good luck.

“From Tangiers to Thessaloniki, Capri to Corfu, Santorini to Sicily, our designs reimagine treasures found during our journey; amulets and talismans, sea life, ice creams and colourful cocktails,” shares Colin. Evil eyes are also an amulet that’s hugely popular in Turkey—it seems a trip to Bodrum might in order.
