A hidden sanctuary: Daiyan Trisha and Yaya Zahir wander in Dior’s Cruise 2020 collection

From one at a Los Angeles desert in 2018 to another at the largest stable in in Europe last year, Dior’s travelling Cruise shows have always been a grand fashion spectacle. Just when we thought we’ve seen it all, creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri opted to present her Cruise 2020 collection in one of the most stunning venues yet: Marrakech. Set in the historic El Badi Palace at night, models walked down the outdoor runway that surrounds the pool with floating tea lights. It was a magical experience, and if expectations were high before the show, they were definitely met—and exceeded—after.

While the love affair between Dior and Marrakech dates back to Yves Saint Laurent’s time as the artistic director, this season’s inspiration was mostly “a cultural dialogue of savoir-faire between the House of Dior, artists and artisans”. Chiuri celebrates her multicultural encounters through crafts, and by continuously putting female empowerment on centre stage. The Cruise 2020 focal prints are made up of the Maison’s toile de Jouy and tarot card motifs that were made with 100% African wax in collaboration with Ivory Coast-based company Uniwax. The fashion house also enlisted Sumano, a Moroccan organisation supporting local weavers and pottery makers to design the set, along with one of the coats in the line-up. All in all, Maria re-integrated Dior’s archives with the rich culture from the crossroads of Europe and Africa, producing a collection that’s a celebration of artisanship. This is the distinct difference between cultural appreciation and appropriation.

Yaya’s favourite pieces:

While I also have a girly side, I love my street-cool flair that bit more, and the accessories, no doubt, complement my style. I’m obsessed with the small Dior Book tote, the knee-high mesh boots, and the chunky enamel rings!

Daiyan’s favourite pieces:

Those who know me will get my love for feminine dresses, so the embroidered maxi dress and the off-shoulder dress in toile de Jouy print definitely caught my eyes.
