New York Bridal Fashion Week AW2020: Trends to know

Congratulations are in order yet again for Mr. and Mrs. Bieber. After first exchanging vows in a New York City courthouse in September 2018, the young couple sealed the deal publicly and tied the knot for the second time in a religious ceremony in South Carolina. For the joyous occassion, Hailey Bieber chose Off-White for her bridal gown in a form-fitting lace gown. Her “dream dress” was traditional but the dramatic train was anything but. Virgil Abloh put his signature quotation mark spin to the bridal train by adding “Till Death Do Us Part”. Is this the most millennial bridal gown you’ve ever seen?

Speaking of all things bridal and the unconventional, New York Bridal Fashion Week Autumn/Winter 2020 just ended and we spotted a few recurring trends that would appease even the most anti-comformist bride. Ahead, 7 key trends to seek if wedding bells are in your horizon.

Baby got back

How do you edge up a wedding dress without raising too many eyebrows? Two words: bare back. The good thing about it is that you can work with a fairly conventional design in the front for picture-taking purposes, which honestly is what mother/grandmother/aunties are most concerned about.

Trade the veil for a cape

Heck yeah, all women wear capes! Especially so on their big day. Ward off the stress and channel your superhero powers with a long, and dramatic cape, in place of a veil.

Bow to fate

Bows and ribbons may not be a new trend, but the key is to reimagine the motif. An oversized skewed bow on the neckline like Amsale adds a heightened fashion element to the conventional off-shouldered wedding gown.

Say yes to the non-white dress

For the most daring of brides, skip the traditional hue altogether! For the goth bride, JLM Couture’s feathered onyx gown would tick all the boxes.

Wearing the pants

Donning a pantsuit on your wedding day is no new feat, although it ranks high in our books. If you’d still prefer to wear trousers but would like to try something new, perhaps a jumpsuit would suit your liking? Or get the best of both worlds with tailored trousers and a skirt layered over.

Crop it like it’s hot

A more casual approach is well suited to beach and garden weddings. If you’re lucky enough to have at an exciting location, you might as well match your gown to suit the occasion.

Second skin

“Tattoo tops” have been popping up on the runway and street style scene in the past year. Follow the trend with intricate embroidery on ultra sheer fabric. If the floral designs look tattooed on you, you’re doing it right.
