The best of KLFW Digital 2020: Syomirizwa Gupta, Fiziwoo, Alia Bastamam, and more

Ever since its inception in 2013, Kuala Lumpur Fashion Week has been a yearly staple on the industry calendar. But with the COVID-19 pandemic forcing all physical events to be on hold, like the Paris Haute Couture and Men’s SS21 Fashion Week, this year’s KLFW has become a digital affair.

Launched on hurr.tv’s Youtube channel over three days with 15 episodes, both up-and-coming and renowned local names showcased their latest collections in a series of virtual formats, be it pre-recorded runway shows or striking fashion films. Aside from the presentations, each episode also features interview snippets with local fashion insiders including designer Alia Bastamam, FashionValet’s founder Vivy Yusof, and more; hair and makeup tips for the ladies; and a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the shows.

Below, some of the most eye-catching presentations from KLFW Digital 2020:

Lilit. x Scha Alyahya

From 21:17 onwards

Contemporary modestwear label Lilit kickstarted the three-day event with a quirky Wes Anderson-style short film to present its collaboration with style darling Scha Alyahya. Spot the pieces that are adorned with her daughter Lara Alana’s doodles.

Syomirizwa Gupta

From 10:32 onwards

Instead of a virtual runway show, Syomirizwa Gupta opted to showcase his mix of old and new designs via a cinematic short film. Directed and conceptualised by director, Zahir Omar (one of his most recent works includes the critically acclaimed crime thriller Fly By Night), the film—titled Kegusaran (Disquietness) is mysterious and captivating.

Farah Khan

From 24:04 onwards

Farah Khan needs no introduction. For its latest collection, the brand stays true to its ultra-glam aesthetic, with feathers, sequins, and intricate embroideries taking centre stage.

Cassey Gan

From 15:13 onwards

This year, Cassey Gan presents a nature-inspired line-up that’s elevated with one-of-a-kind headgear and jewellery by Bremen Wong Millinery.

WooFiziwoo

From 2:57 onwards

Fiziwoo’s diffusion line, WooFiziwoo unveiled its SS21 collection that comprises streetwear silhouettes, pop-art graphics, and tie-dye prints.

Behati

From 14:48 onwards

Never one to shy away from striking concepts, Behati‘s show opened with a news broadcasting format before models appeared in the Merdeka-inspired collection that references Malaysia’s rich cultural heritage.

Kitwoo

From 1:30 onwards

Shot at a wide field, Kitwoo’s Spring/Summer 2021 collection is made up of tailored looks that have been given an eye-catching twist, be it blazers with angular cut-outs on both sides of the chest, layered and sewn with a ribbed tank top, or with a sheer fabric overlay that will sway with every move.

Alia Bastamam

From 1:06 onwards

Titled ‘Horizons’, Alia Bastamam’s Resort 2021 collection is all about escapism. The presentation starts with the sound of waves and sand that gets us in the mood, and clothing-wise, you can find the brand’s signature pleated and draped ensembles in ultra-feminine hues, including ombré shades that add extra allure. We know what we’re wearing on our next beach vacay.

Mimpikita

From 10:56 onwards

This year, Mimpikita wants you to indulge in a little fashion fantasy with its short film titled Splendour in the Woods. Aim to exude a playful and whimsical feel, the concise collection is anything but simple—take a look at the outfits in striking prints, a juxtaposition of fabrics, and a bright and vivid colour palette.

Rizman Ruzaini

From 15:03 onwards

Rizman Ruzaini’s SS21 luxe ready-to-wear collection is a celebration of our local fashion royalties. Supermodels Amber Chia, Tengku Azura, Nasha Aziz, and singer Hael Husaini star in the short film that features the brand’s double take-worthy looks, fast cars, and—wait for it—a party on the plane.
