PFW SS16: Balenciaga

A boudoir-laced exit

PFW SS16: Balenciaga

What a befitting theme it was, that Alexander Wang’s final collection for Balenciaga was romantic as it was boudoir-chic in the most feminine way possible. Although ironic as his signature dark, street couture nuances were absent, the off-white collection had plenty of silk, cotton, linen ruched with ruffles, feathers and ribbons to make up for it.

A lineup of models and stars glided down the runway, from Suki Waterhouse and Anna Ewers to Zoë Kravitz to Riley Keough, all clad in sensual lace-inserted slips, summery frocks, and lace slippers. But when Wang deviates off his usual course, there’s always still a few elements (racerback tops and low-slung trousers) from the collection that makes it his.

Interesting details to note include fringed bags, satin fanny-packs, and a few matelassé jackets that offered a peek of underwired bras beneath. Wang’s excitement was discernable as he skipped down the catwalk and waved thanks to his spectators post-show—perhaps it was a glimpse of the finer things to come at his eponymous label, while we wait with bated breath to see what Balenciaga’s new chapter entails.
