Mulan world premiere: What the cast wore on the red carpet

Three and a half years after Walt Disney Studios confirmed that a live-action version of Mulan is in the works, the movie is finally set to open in theatres on March 27. At the Los Angeles world premiere last night, the cast and guests turned up the heat on the red carpet in their show-stopping ensemble. Lead actress Liu Yifei, in particular, looked like a fairytale princess in an Elie Saab gown from its Haute Couture 2020 collection. The larger-than-life gown was complete with a sweetheart neckline, a long train, and embroidered with a metallic phoenix motif that was apt for the event. In an interview with USA Today, the Chinese actress explained what the phoenix print meant to her. “They are my inspiration for the movie. It’s a symbol of Mulan’s spirit. It’s something meaningful.”

Other stars were dressed in equally mention-worthy looks too, including Ming-Na Wen (who voiced Mulan’s character back in 1998) in an oriental-inspired gown by Mark Zunino; Christina Aguilera—who sang the soundtrack of the animated movie and also the upcoming live-action remake—who donned her contrasting Galia Lahav gown with a swath of red highlights in her hair; and Marsai Martin in a warrior-inspired look by Nina Ricci. When it comes to the guys, Jet Li (who plays the emperor), Donnie Yen (who plays the leader of the Imperial Army), and Yoson An (who plays Mulan’s love interest) all looked suave in their respective pantsuits. We especially love how Yoson accessorised his risk-taking brown Ermenegildo Zegna suit with a sparkly Chopard brooch.
