The first Monday in May is fashion’s biggest night out, period. Every year (since its first back in 1948), the Met Gala brings together the biggest names across all industries to celebrate the year’s Costume Institute exhibition. While this year’s ‘Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination’ theme proved to be one the best yet, you can expect an even bigger event in 2019, as the theme has been revealed—Camp: Notes on Fashion. Curated around American writer Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay “Notes on Camp”, she describes camp as the “love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration…style at the expense of content”, according to Wendy Yu Curator in Charge of the Costume Institute, Andrew Bolton.
As usual, Anna Wintour will be hosting the event alongside some of the biggest names in the industry (last year’s being Rihanna, Donatella Versace and Amal Clooney), and the co-chairs will be Lady Gaga, Harry Styles and Serena Williams. The entire event will be (fittingly) sponsored by Gucci, and its creative director Alessandro Michele will also joining the list of co-hosts next year. In an interview with the New York Times, the designer says, “Camp really means the unique ability to combine high art and pop culture; it is not kitsch. The Met exhibition will give contemporary significance to Sontag’s perspective.” Next year’s Met Gala is definitely one worth looking forward too.
