Watch now: The making of Dior SS18 look 11

Inspired by the world of artist Niki de Saint Phalle, Maria Grazia Chiuri’s Spring/Summer 2018 collection for Dior was a celebration of female empowerment and youthful eccentricity. From classic Breton stripes to artsy embroideries, and tulle to sequins, each look contributes to the story, and among them, are intricately made pieces that required the craftsmanship of a specialist atelier. Case in point: the jumpsuit in look 11. Made in an atelier that has worked with the brand for almost 30 years, the studio possesses the technology to knit the jumpsuit from neck to ankle in one piece without a single seam, and it’s created using different stitches in 18-gauge fineness. While the designers took 24 hours to come up with and finalise the look, two technicians were required to develop a knit program from scratch by hand (it took them 10 days) as the machines weren’t able to produce a toile beforehand. The final piece is made of 1 kg of viscose on average for different colours, and took nine hours to knit.
