Trend alert: Boiler suits

Think “boiler suit” is just another way of naming “jumpsuit”? Think again. Traditionally worn by men maintaining coal-fired boilers (which is how it got its name), the garment is typically a loose-fitting one-piece that shields the whole body except for the head, hands, and feet. Fast forward to today, the utilitarian piece is commonly associated with heavy-duty workers such as mechanics and electricians. But thanks to the Spring/Summer 2019 runways, the all-in-one look has been spotted on the sidewalks by many street style stars, and we’re more than ready to give the trend a go. There’s nothing we love more than comfortable clothing that will also keep our style game on point. If you have concerns about how warm the piece will be, fret not. They may not always be tropical weather-friendly (especially in our recent heatwave), but there are definitely pared down styles that are oh-so-easy to emulate.

Here are some style inspos to get you started:

1. Those who are a fan of denim-on-denim pairings can give the eye-catching pink look a try—all you need is a pair of sneakers and a touch of print (in the form of a lightweight scarf) and you’re good to go!

2. Yoyo’s neutral coloured get-up is perfect for those who’d like to dip their toes in the trend—it catches your attention without being overly loud. To elevate the utilitarian piece (no pun intended), opt for a pair of heels or boots.

3. Monochrome hues are always fail-proof, but once in a while, the more colours, the better. The juxtaposition of pastels in this look is perfect, and we like how Erika paired the piece with a tailored blazer and pointy-toe pumps that lend a chic finish.

4. If you’re travelling to a slightly colder climate, Tiffany’s sleek leather piece will keep you warm without feeling overly bulky. Tuck your hem into your thigh-high boots, and pair it with a matching-coloured bag for a polished outfit.

Some of the pieces to note from our list below include Stella McCartney‘s sustainable boiler suit in look 1, which was first spotted on the Spring/Summer 2019 runway. Crafted from a technical blend of cotton and linen, the high collar and zipper details add that trendy flair, but if you like for it to be more figure-accentuating, the Velcro-adjustable waist lets you customise the fit. Zimmerman‘s version also comes with an elastic waist, but what we like most, are the puffy sleeves and the light lavender hue that add a girly touch. And lastly, if loud prints are your thing, the sketch-motif piece from Matty Bovan is an artsy alternative to an otherwise plain look—spot the zippers that can be unzipped to reveal peekaboo skin.
