5 Best restaurants and bars in Chinatown KL

Chinatown is on the rise, and has been for a while now—with trendy new bars and eateries opening within old shophouses and back alleys, the rapid gentrification of this cultural hub has birthed a new life for this historical part of town.

Find our picks for the best places for food and drink around Jalan Petaling down below.

Wildflowers, Restaurant and Bar

Another new eatery across the street from Merchant’s lane, Wildflowers expertly blends different cuisines to create a truly unique dining experience. From Japanese and Thai, to Malaysian and French, to even Chinese and Mexican fusions, no stone is left unturned by the creative kitchen. Aside from the plating being a genuine visual experience, the food is good.

Opt for some small plates like the Assam Unagi Nori Sushi or the Salmon Sashimi with Green Thai Sauce, as well as some mains like the Stewed Beef Brisket Bourguignon. If you’re meat or gluten free, this eatery can cater to you upon request. When the mains have come and gone, you can also treat yourself to delicious desserts like the Coconut Panna Cotta or the Deconstructed Tiramisu, and if you fancy it, there are plenty of wines and cocktails to wash the nosh down with.

Jann Bar and Quan’s Kitchen, Four Points by Sheraton

Jann is only recently opened, located on the seventh floor of Four Points by Sheraton. Hidden within the walls of the Four Points Hotel, it’s not the first place you’d think to go, but we guarentee it’s a real hidden gem. Named after a member of the family that owns the hotel, the bar serves up a clever array of Chinatown-themed drinks such as the Assam Laksa cocktail, a tangy tribute to the popular street food. And if youre halal-only, don’t fret—there’s lots of mocktails to choose from too, like the coconut-themed Apam Balik!

Address: Four Points by Sheraton Kuala Lumpur, Jalan Balai Polis, Chinatown

Opening Hours: 4pm – 12am (Sunday – Thursday), 4am – 1am (Friday – Saturday)

P/s: If you’re feeling peckish, Quan’s Kitchen is just upstairs. See the mural that covers one of its walls, handpainted by the namesake sisters Jann and Quan—it makes for a perfectly picturesque place to get a plate of your favourite quintessential Chinatown specialties as well as some Western favourites.

Chocha Foodstore

Serving up exciting twists on Malaysian staples, as well as providing their extensive selection of teas, ChoCha foodstore is the epitome of run-down charm. Located across the street from Four Points, Chocha is a little evasive–previously Mah Lian Hotel, the restaurant has preserved the appearance of its original entrance and is, therefore, a little easy to miss.

However, step inside and you’ll be greeted with shabby-chic decor and an unmistakably delicious aroma—Crispy Chilli Squid, Chinese Pesto Flat Noodle, Cured Mackerel Potatoes and their famous CFC (Cincalok Marinated Chicken), their lunch and dinner menus are bound to please. Plus, if you’re looking for a nightcap, just upstairs is Botak Liquour Bar, their cocktail bar which serves local twists on classic drinks.

Concubine Restaurant and Bar

A fairly new addition to the nightlife at Chinatown, Concubine is a swanky little bar with a funky interior, complete with murals left, right and centre. The restaurant bar is located within KL’s best kept secret, Kwai Chai Hong (Little Demon Alley), an Insta-worthy sight to behold, full of murals on lovingly restored heritage shophouses, with bars, restaurants and cafes tucked into its walls.

The bar boasts fun cocktails and a genuinely tasty tapas menu—we recommend the Tuna Tostadas and Keropok Nachos for an appetiser, the Double Cheese Burger Gyoza and the Mushroom Skewers as light bites and the Green Tea Smoked Lamb Rack as a main! Then, if you’re feeling it, you can top it off with one of their cocktails (ahem, the Yuzu Spritz). Again, if that’s not your cup of tea there are plenty of mocktails to suit your boot too. Finally, on occassion you can catch exclusive DJ sets to top your evenings off!

The Attic Bar

Hidden away in one of Chinatown’s hippest hostels, Travel Hub Guesthouse, this rooftop bar has incredible views of the South of KL (yes, you can see the Twin Towers!). Serving an array of drinks, including Tuak (rice wine) themed drinks, beer cocktails, classic drinks with a twist and much more,  it’s definitely one to keep an eye out for. In addition to its drinks, The Attic Bar also serves delicious authentic Italian food, including Truffle Arancini, pastas and pizzas.
