A new bingsu competitor has entered the scene with the arrival of a cafe offering a Japanese version of the shaved ice dessert. Aptly named Kakigori after the dessert itself, which is a summer favourite in Japan, the cafe offers a breezy atmosphere with its interior as well as a lighthearted, playful and extensive menu.

2. Mykori Dessert Cafe, Bandar Puchong
Yet another purveyor of Japanese snacks and desserts with a twist, Mykori Dessert Cafe’s main recommendation, however, is their array of taiyaki flavours which are available in both sweet and savoury options – the cheesy croissant versions are high on their list. Another of the cafe’s most popular choice is the Melon Kakigori which tastes as good as it looks.

3. Hoppers KL, Pudu
Everyone’s favourite appam – also known as hoppers in some places – has been given a modern twist in both sweet and savoury variations and we hear that the menu changes every fortnight. Although the Gula Melaka Hopper seems to be quite a hit and this is a list of new dessert places, be sure to not give the nasi lemak-inspired hopper a miss.

4. Terracotta Cafe & Boutique, Tropicana Avenue PJ
If there’s one word to describe this cafe, it would be whimsical. From its decor to the items on the menu, everything emits a sort of dreamy vibe. The highlights here are the Unicorn Teardrop, which is essentially their version of the Japanese mizu shingen mochi (or water cake), and the butterfly pea tea.

5. Tiny Temptress Artisan Patisserie, Sri Petaling
For cute macarons and other French-inspired treats, Tiny Temptress Artisan Patisserie is the place to go. Originally an online business, they opened a physical store a few months ago much to their loyal fans’ delight and have since received a ton of positive feedback, especially on Instagram.
