BURO BITES: Torito KL Delivers a Bold Fusion of Peruvian-Japanese Cuisine
Flavours beyond borders

Feast your senses at Torito KL, where the bold flavours of Peru and Japan collide in a culinary experience that’s as vibrant as it is unforgettable.
For those who like their meals bold and vibrant, a trip to Torito KL is a must. This new dining hotspot on the 53rd floor of the Banyan Tree Kuala Lumpur greets you with bright colours, stunning artwork, and a wall of Torito de Pucara figurines—colourful clay bulls that lend the restaurant its name. During the day, floor-to-ceiling windows flood the space with natural light and once night falls, you’ll get to take in the sparkling city views. On the menu, Peruvian and Japanese flavours come together in an exciting fusion, offering dishes that are both adventurous yet comfortingly familiar.

To start our meal, we were served freshly baked cassava bread with housemade Peruvian chilli sauce. Warm, slightly sweet, and not-too-cheesy, the bread perfectly complemented the chilli’s subtle heat. Next were the Nikkei-styled sushi in two flavours: acevichado and salmon. The former was a refreshing combination of fresh tuna, prawn, and crispy onion tempura for an added crunch. Meanwhile, the latter paired strips of raw salmon with avocado, garlic furikake, and a spicy aji amarillo sauce for a fiery kick.

A must-try on the menu is the ceviche clasico, a refreshing cold dish featuring raw barramundi marinated in Tiger’s Milk for a tangy punch, served with fried squid and sweet potato cubes. For context, Tiger’s Milk is a zesty Peruvian marinade, made from a mixture of lime juice, fish fillets, fish stock, aji limo, yellow Peruvian peppers, garlic, red onions, cilantro, minced celery, salt, and pepper. It was a great palate cleanser to cool down with after all the heat from the previous dishes.

For our mains, we tried the grilled Hokkaido scallop, served with a trio of signature Peruvian sauces that brought a pleasant richness to its smoky char. Topped with diced shallots for a hint of sharpness and texture, the dish quickly became a table favourite. We also got a taste of the lomo saltado, a hearty rice dish with sautéed Australian beef tenderloin, red onion, tomatoes, and coriander. Seasoned to absolute perfection, it was the kind of comfort dish that you’d crave on a rainy day that didn’t skimp on nutrients either.

To wrap up our feast, we tried Torito’s twist on picarones, Peru’s beloved national dessert. The crispy sweet potato rings were drizzled with fig sauce for a rich, caramel-like sweetness, while the honeydew ice cream added a fruity and chilly contrast that brought the dessert together. Whether you’re after a casual dinner with friends or a romantic date-night spot, Torito KL is the place to be for a culinary experience that’s as vibrant as it is unforgettable.
