The Range Rover Velar makes its debut in Malaysia

A mid-size luxury SUV that comes in between the smaller Range Rover Evoque and the larger Range Rover Sport models, the new Range Rover Velar encompasses ‘reductionism’ as its design essence, giving elegance and modernity a new meaning to the brand’s lineup of automobiles. Packed with unique characteristics and features, it’s definitely one of a kind.

One of the highlights of the Velar is its flush deployable door handles. Flawlessly integrated with the exterior of the SUV, the handles extract when the vehicle is unlocked and retract back once it’s locked. It’s not merely a design element for show. It contributes to the low drag coefficient of only 0.32, making it the most aerodynamically-efficient vehicle that Land Rover has ever produced.

Moving on to the front of the car, feast your eyes on the small-but-powerful, ultra-slim Matrix LED headlights that deliver remarkable visibility on the road, especially during night time or under bad weather conditions. They feature Intelligent High Beam Assist (IHBA) and Adaptive Front Lighting (AFL) where the IHBA maximises the number of high beam sections around on-coming traffic for ultimate visibility while casting shadows in front of oncoming vehicles for optimum safety.

Take a look inside the Velar and you’ll find that it comes with two screens. They call it the Touch Pro Duo. Coupled with the new InControl infotainment system, the two takes driving to a whole new level. As Range Rover intended the Velar to look sleek and uncluttered, inside and out, you won’t be able to tell the two 10-inch high definition screens—seamlessly fused with the cabin architecture—are there till it is lit upon touch. While behind the wheel, both of these screens work harmoniously to allow the driver to multitask such as making phone calls with the lower screen while the upper one continues to show the navigation system.

The all-new Head-Up Display—available only in the R-Dynamic model—extends this convenience as it shows the driver key data about the vehicle such as speed, gear position and navigation directions—all on the windscreen. That’s not all. You can even see your phone, the radio channel you’re on or the name of the track you’re listening to. Keeping your eyes on the road is important, after all.

Side note: One of our other favourite features of the Velar is the optional Electronic Air Suspension. It comes with the Automatic Access Height function, allowing the driver to get in and out of the vehicle with greater ease, as it lowers the SUV by 40mm when activated.

When it comes to performance, the Velar can go from 0-100km/h in 6.7 seconds and return a spectacular 7.6-litres/100km and 173g/km CO2 on the European combined cycle—all thanks to its Ingenium powertrain. The P250 powertrain is the first of the two new petrol engines that has a peak power of 250PS and high maximum torque of 365Nm which is retained from just 1,200rpm to 4,500rpm. It is also paired with a smooth-shifting ZF eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive with Intelligent Driveline Dynamics.

And that means it’s excellent be it on the road, or off-road. The intelligent and efficient all-wheel-drive (AWD) system provides optimum torque distribution, ensuring its capabilities with various road conditions. The responsive system can make the transition from 100% rear bias to fully locked in only 165 milliseconds; while transient torque delivery to the front axle requires only 100 milliseconds.

To top it off, it’s always fun to customise. The luxury SUV comes in two variants—the Velar (P250) model and the Velar R-Dynamic (P250), with eight different exterior colours to choose from, including Fuji White, Corris Grey, Santorini Black, Firenze Red and Silicon Silver. The Velar (P250) comes standard with 20-inch rims whereas the R-Dynamic model comes with 21-inch rims.

The Velar (P250) model is priced at RM 529,800 (inclusive of 6% GST, excluding road tax, registration fee and insurance).

The Velar R-Dynamic (P250) is priced at RM 588,800 (inclusive of 6% GST, excluding road tax, registration fee and insurance).

All Land Rover vehicles distributed by authorised dealers come with the Land Rover Care programme which includes a five-year warranty, five years’ free service and three years’ roadside assistance.
