6 Reasons Why the Volvo EX90 and XC90 Are the Future of Luxury on the Road

The new Volvo EX90 and updated XC90 show that luxury can be smart, sustainable, and seriously good-looking. We have the scoop on why these two might just win you over and claim a spot in your driveway.

In a world where luxury and sustainability often feel like opposing forces, Volvo is redefining what it means to drive responsibly and in style. Recently introduced on our shores, the all-electric Volvo EX90 and the refreshed XC90 plug-in hybrid (PHEV) are proof that modern SUVs can offer both intelligent design and conscious engineering. These models are more than just vehicles, they’re rolling statements about what the future of driving should look like. Whether you’re looking to go fully electric or want a hybrid that blends performance with eco-awareness, Volvo’s latest lineup delivers on every front.

Here are six reasons why the Volvo EX90 and XC90 facelift should be on your radar.

POWER WITHOUT DRAMA

The 2025 Volvo EX90 makes a strong entrance in its Twin Motor Ultra variant. It delivers an impressive 517 PS and 910 Nm of torque with all-wheel drive, and thanks to the new SPA2 platform, it sprints from 0–100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds. Furthermore, its substantial 111 kWh battery offers up to 600 kilometers of range, while supporting both 250 kW DC fast charging and 22 kW AC charging for added convenience.

Meanwhile, the refreshed 2025 Volvo XC90 continues with its proven two-litre turbocharged plug-in hybrid setup. Now paired with a 145 PS electric motor, it produces a combined 455 PS and 709 Nm. It also features a 6.4 kW AC onboard charger, making overnight charging easy, and offers up to 71 kilometers of pure electric driving which makes it ideal for daily commutes.

Bonus tech flex: The EX90 isn’t just a taker, it’s a power source, with bi-directional charging that can charge your home or even another EV.

A SPA ON WHEELS

Step into the all-electric Volvo EX90, and you’re greeted by a sustainable yet luxurious cabin. The minimalist design features backlit natural wood panels, wool-blend seating, and a massive 14.5-inch portrait touchscreen with Google built-in.

For audiophiles, the 25-speaker Bowers & Wilkins 3D surround sound system, including headrest-integrated speakers, transforms the cabin into an immersive audio experience.

In comparison, the updated XC90 offers a more traditional luxury experience, with Nappa leather upholstery and premium materials that make it both sophisticated and comfortable. The environment invites relaxation, all while exuding the unmistakable Volvo touch.

Fun details: Both SUVs use Volvo’s Advanced Air Cleaner system, while the EX90 adds a PM2.5 particle sensor to track and clean the air in real-time.

DISPLAYS FOR DAYS

The EX90 sets the standard with its sleek 14.5-inch portrait touchscreen powered by Unreal Engine. This high-tech display delivers ultra-smooth navigation, vibrant visuals, and a user experience that’s as intuitive as it is futuristic. Plus, the EX90 is designed to stay ahead of the curve with over-the-air updates, keeping the system fresh and future-proof.

On the other hand, the facelifted XC90 features an 11.2-inch Google built-in display, offering a simplified, user-friendly interface. The display also includes a smart shortcut bar that adapts to your driving conditions for more seamless operation.

Surprise tech alert: Both systems integrate Google Maps and Assistant, and the EX90 automatically receives over-the-air updates to stay future-proof.

ROOM FOR SEVEN

The EX90 takes family luxury to the next level with its minimalist interior and ambient lighting that adjusts to your circadian rhythm, creating a serene, calming atmosphere for all passengers. Designed for comfort, it boasts a spacious, tech-forward cabin that ensures a relaxing ride for the entire family.

Meanwhile, the XC90 continues to deliver exceptional third-row comfort, making it an ideal family SUV. It also carries over its signature crystal gear knobs, crafted by Swedish glassmaker Orrefors, adding a touch of elegance to the already sophisticated interior.

Pro tip: The third-row in the EX90 is surprisingly spacious for an EV and still leaves decent boot space behind it.

SAFETY THAT THINKS AHEAD

Set to redefine safety, the EX90 features Volvo’s most advanced technology to date. It’s equipped with a roof-mounted LiDAR system, enhancing its 360° awareness through a suite of 16 ultrasonic sensors, eight cameras, and five radars. This ensures it has a clear, real-time view of its surroundings for a safer driving experience. Inside, an innovative radar system scans for occupants, whether its people, pets, or children, and automatically prevents the doors from locking if anyone is accidentally left behind.

In comparison, the facelifted XC90 continues to uphold Volvo’s renowned safety standards, offering features like Pilot Assist and City Safety. While it doesn’t have the same LiDAR tech as the EX90, it still delivers a comprehensive suite of safety features that ensure peace of mind on every journey.

Parent-approved perk: Both models include Level 2 semi-autonomous driving via Pilot Assist, with updates to improve functionality over time.

LUXURIOUS SUSTAINABILITY

In the EX90, sustainable design isn’t just a feature, it’s the foundation. The cabin features recycled and renewable materials, beginning with carpets made from Econyl®, a regenerated nylon sourced from discarded fishing nets and ocean plastics. Seats are upholstered in Nordico, a premium, leather-free material crafted from recycled PET bottles, bio-based resources from Nordic forests, and waste from the wine cork industry.

Complementing it all, backlit FSC-certified wood panels add warmth and sophistication without compromising the planet.

Meanwhile, the XC90 stays true to Volvo’s premium feel while introducing more sustainable choices. It boasts ethically-sourced soft Nappa leather, while the rest of the cabin uses long-lasting materials designed to minimise environmental impact. While not as overtly eco-focused as the EX90, it still reflects Volvo’s broader push for carbon neutrality and material traceability.

Did you know? Volvo has committed to being a climate-neutral company by 2040, with plans to be fully electric by 2030.
