Checking in: The Standard Brings Its Hollywood Roots to the Heart of Singapore
Tinseltown tranquillity

First opened on West Hollywood’s Sunset Strip in 1999, The Standard has since amassed a cult following for its elevated take on boutique hospitality. Its unique presence ripples around the world including the bustling city of Singapore. Stepping onto the scene last December, the lifestyle luxury brand occupies a coveted blue-chip spot on Orange Grove Road, merely steps away from the 150-year-old UNESCO Botanic Gardens.
Bringing a piece of its history to the little red dot, The Standard Singapore boasts a lenticular façade that recalls archetypal American billboards. On the inside, however, an inspiring cultural conversation unfolds as elements native to the country are sewn into the fabrics of the building. This particularity mirrors the creative exchange between Standard International’s in-house design team and Ministry of Design.
The promise of an urban oasis that puts an emphasis on Modernist aesthetics while simultaneously paying tribute to cultural diversity is simply too precious to pass up for us digital nomads. So when we recently flew to Singapore for La La Land in Concert, for which we had the chance to sit down with award-winning composer Justin Hurwitz, we decided to give in to temptation and check out the hotel ourselves.
THE LOBBY
Entering the fine establishment feels like walking into a space you’re already familiar with. There is neither a grand foyer so eager to impress nor overzealous staff ready to intimidate with a long list of bespoke services. Conveying a sense of comfort to its discerning guests, The Standard Singapore introduces itself with a reception counter that doubles as an oversized terrarium. The botanically-inspired installation by artist Eric Tobua comes alive amid potted plants, mid-century modern furniture, and plenty of natural materials.
THE ROOMS
The Standard Singapore houses 143 rooms and suites across its eight floors. Each of them comes with floor-to-ceiling windows, creating a space that feels expansive and connected to its serene surroundings. At any given time, you’re either enveloped by greenery or the vibrancy of Orchard Road. Ours overlook the swimming pool. The other highlight here is the wooden structure with a ribbed design that stretches across the width of the bed and extends onto the ceiling. It enhances the room’s aesthetics and ambience.
THE RESTAURANTS
There are two dining options provided at the premises—Kaya at The Standard and Café Standard. The former is especially noteworthy as it entices the guests with its Japanese-inspired menu that turns the Izakaya experience on its head. One of the dishes that stood out to us was Finding Miso. The tenderness of the char-grilled flounder, coupled with the rich cauliflower cream, miso tsuyu, and lotus chips led to a symphony of flavours and textures. Meanwhile, the wallpaper art by Saran Yen Panya offers a feast for the eyes.
THE SWIMMING POOL
Planning to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and hang back at the hotel? You should head to the pool for respite. Whether you choose to take a dip or just laze around on the shaded chaise lounges, you’re guaranteed peace of mind. But if you do decide to go for a quick splash, do not miss the swim-up pool bar—an extension of Kaya at The Standard—and savour a crisp, refreshing cocktail. We’d recommend coming or staying until the day’s end; it is the time when you can watch the sun set to some low-key beats.
