Weekend getaway: The St. Regis Langkawi, Malaysia

From the moment you touch down on the island of Langkawi, you know you’re in for a real treat when the St. Regis luxury chauffeured limousine picks you up from the airport. A mere half an hour drive later, when the surroundings become a little more secluded, and the trees a bit denser, you know you’ve arrived at the St. Regis Langkawi. The keyword here? Quiet luxury.

Located on the Southern tip of the island, the all-suite resort features just 89 rooms, including 4 over-water villas, complete with private plunge pools. Designed by architecture firm Gensler, with interiors by GA Design and Bensley Design Studio, the St. Regis Langkawi is done up in classic contemporary style, with a Middle Eastern slant evident in the Islamic arches, mashrabiya screens, symmetrical courtyards, and a garden oasis complete with date palms and bougainvillea plants.

Middle Eastern touches also make an appearance in the in-room dining menu in the form of cold and hot mezzes, chicken tagine, ful medames, and mixed grilled meats served with slices of pita bread. There’re more options, of course, with soups, salads, burgers on offer, and also Wagyu beef rendang and lobster nasi lemak, if you’re craving for some local food, but elevated, of course, St. Regis-style.

The beachfront resort runs the length of a 600m beach that encompasses a lagoon in which you can swim, kayak or paddleboard. For the more active, the Athletic Club offers a range of the latest TechnoGym fitness equipment, and houses a yoga studio with a resident instructor who can take you through a regular yoga class or if it’s some QT with a loved one you’re after, a couple’s yoga session.

If there’s one thing you must try when you’re at the St. Regis Langkawi, it’s the Iridium Spa. Located in the heart of the resort, the signature spa truly is an oasis of calm and tranquility. Indulge in a variety of bespoke facials and body treatments. A signature treatment is the Heritage Malaya, a spa journey that celebrates the traditional beauty rituals of Malay sultanates and features the use of specially concocted traditional botanicals, which aim to re-energise and revitalise.

The ultimate indulgence, however, is the Awakening spa treatment—an eight hour-long journey of the senses that will leave you feeling utterly pampered and rejuvenated. The Awakening begins with a short meditation session followed by a customised body exfoliation, wrap and a 90-minute body massage. Lunch is then served at the stunning Kayu Puti restaurant (another must-try), an overwater restaurant complete with vintage wooden doors and rustic, beach chic interiors. After a leisurely lunch, you’re whisked back into the quiet sanctuary of Iridium spa for a facial using Babor products, hand and foot spa, with the spa journey finally ending with a relaxing bath in the comforts of the expansive spa suite.

Head back to Kayu Puti, where the hammocks by the bar offer front row seats to catch the stunning sunsets. Order up a signature St. Regis Bloody Mary, or try the local version, the Lang Mary, and toast to a weekend getaway well spent.
