Chopard Breaks New Ground With the Insofu High Jewellery Collection

The quest for excellence in the realm of high jewellery is one that does not cease with fleeting admiration. Chopard, for one, constantly strives for the kind of newness that has propelled it as one of the major forces in the industry today. Its latest output, Insofu, serves as a testament to this vision. As breathtaking as it is boundary-breaking, the collection features exquisite gems carved out of the 6,225-carat rough emerald the Swiss luxury house acquired back in 2022.

Having made its splashy debut during Oscars week last year, the collection returns with 15 new creations. Each piece blends the fluid lines of nature, abstract forms, and the opulence of Art Deco. The four-necklace ensemble, for instance, takes a page from The Great Gatsby. Its brilliant orchestration of designs—from the choker to the sautoir—is only surpassed by the precious stones it features, with pink sapphires, pearls, and diamonds accompanying the emeralds.

Crafting a catalogue that Daisy Buchanan would actually leave Tom for, Chopard’s co-president and artistic director Caroline Scheufele has supplemented Insofu with five matching gowns by Caroline’s Couture. That said, the crown jewel of the collection is undoubtedly the elephant-shaped pendant suspended from a long chain. Boasting emeralds of various cuts and proportions, this pièce de résistance is framed by dazzling diamonds that form the mammal’s tusks.

The incorporation of the elephant silhouette is no coincidence. It is a deliberate decision whose origin can be traced back to the very inception of the collection. The term ‘insofu’, as a matter of fact, is adopted from the Bemba language that translates to the elephant. It is the name the miners in the Kagem mine in Zambia gave the aforementioned rough emerald, who were inspired by its trunk-like shape and sheer size, which set it apart from other gemstones in the region.

Speaking of which, the call to forge the Insofu collection from a raw stone as opposed to the pre-cut and polished set is yet another testament to Chopard’s commitment to sustainability. It’s a move that guarantees traceability as it connects the brand with those at the beginning of the supply chain. Chopard has also subscribed to the Provenance Proof’s Emerald Paternity Test developed by Gübelin Gem Lab. It allows one to trace their jewels to the original rough gem.
