These Chanel sculptural beauties are inspired by the lion of Venice

“August 19th is my birthday. I was born under the sign of Leo. I am a Leo and, like a lion, I use my claws to prevent people from doing me harm, but, believe me, I suffer more from scratching than from being scratched.”

— Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel

The lion is also the symbol of her favourite city, Venice, as a protective enblem in the form of a bronze winged lion sculpture in Saint Mark’s Square. In Coco Chanel’s apartment at 31 rue Cambon, one will find many statues of the majestic animal in the late fashion icon’s living space. Evidently, the symbolism of the lion was very dear to her heart, one that has found its way onto many a Chanel creation over the years.

This year, a new chapter is unveiled in the Sous le Signe du Lion high jewellery collection. Taking inspiration from the iconic lion of Venice, lapis blue and astral white medallions adorn the 18K yellow gold and white gold jewellery. Each piece is a work of art, featuring an exquisite sculptural lion glistening with diamonds in its mane and/or eyes. Take a look at them here:
