Met Gala 2019 looks: The good, the OTT, and the ‘meh’

It’s the first Monday of May, where fashion’s biggest heavyweight come out to play for the industry’s biggest day of the year. As revealed late last year, this year’s theme—Camp: Notes on Fashion—was curated around American writer Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay “Notes on Camp”, where she describes camp as the “love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration…style at the expense of content”. But what does it mean, really? In simpler words, camp is a style that “regards something as appealing because of its bad taste and ironic value”. Think Cher’s Bob Mackie gown and headpiece at the 1986 Oscars. Think Lady Gaga’s meat dress at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards. It might be one of the most difficult themes in recent history.

As the A-listers—including this year’s co-chairs Anna Wintour, Lady Gaga, Harry Styles, Serena Williams and Alessandro Michele—grace the red carpet at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, take a look at all the good, the bad and the over-the-top ensembles we’ve spotted so far. Let’s just say they did not disappoint.
