It seems that eccentricity has taken a hold on a slew of designers, or at least their inspirations for the AW16 runway. Monique Lhuillier had an eclectic woman in mind this season—taking cues from Talitha Getty, she weaves in the adage “more is more” onto the runway with exaggerated floral appliques and a ’70s-esque retro flair. Hervé Léger by Max Azria, on the other hand, went punk in the best way possible, as edgier styling by way of grunge embellishments and fringed hems donned their signature curve-accentuating numbers.
Eccentric as usual is Alexander Wang: street swag, statement tops, and marijuana leaf motifs served as a provocative collection, a far cry from his all-white boudoir-laced Balenciaga exit last season. Elsewhere, brushing against the shoulders of streetwear is Baja East, lending its “loose luxury” touch to silk separates, satin maxis, and oversized outerwear.
Speaking of outerwear, Altuzarra may have presented some of the most covetable coats of the season. A patchwork of exquisite textiles lined the collection, not averse to a palette of deep, sophisticated hues and monochromatic notions. Meanwhile, Suno’s magnified plaids may not be for everyone, but the final look—an unassuming combination of floral print, pleats, and sleek metallic finish—just made its way to the top in my list of favourites thus far.
