Maximalist makeup is injecting the colour we all need in our lives right now

Is your weekend not feeling like it used to (before MCO, that is)? In case your days are all moving in a blurry daze (read: “what day is it, again?”), keep your spirits up by indulging your visual senses with a myriad of colours and textures.

Ahead, we’ve compiled the maximalist’s guide to embracing makeup to the fullest during this stay-home season. Not having a reason to go out doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t put on makeup—pick out your most vivid pans, palettes and lippies to practise creating a colour-drenched visage. Let these be your visual compass:

Tropical heat

Can you tell that our subconscious is already ready for summer? Bring on striking hues in the form of tangerine, fuchsia and yellow. Colour is in and there are more ways than one to upgrade your lewk, be it Studio 54-inspired brights to monochromatic magic.

Pack on the glitz…

There’s always time for a touch of shimmer, especially when worn in dramatic fashion. From smokey wings to exaggerated graphic eyeliner, practise your eye makeup skills one of these days with three looks as your reference.

… and the glamour

Up the ante with sparkly details in the form of metallics and crystals. Makeup artist Katie Jane Hughes makes a case for mixing metals—for those who can’t decide between gold or silver.

Pretty in pastels

Our new favourite way to wear colour? With dreamy pastels, of course. Take a leaf out of these makeup pros’ books and rock your favourite matte soft hues in the most ethereal combinations.
